‘So what you’re telling me,’ began Glenda Blaize, ‘is that we’re looking at potential multiple robberies of multiple locations all over the island tomorrow during the Naming Ceremony and we have no idea who is behind it or how to stop them?’

‘I’m afraid that’s right, Madam Cooperate,’ nodded Theodore. ‘And if we can’t prevent him, by either reason or force, then we simply don’t have sufficient manpower to protect every possible target.’

Captain Brock looked grave. ‘Perhaps I should have my men out seeing if they get wind of any mass meetings?’

‘I think it’s too late for that, Captain,’ said Theodore regretfully. ‘We should certainly carry on looking for Mouse. It’s imperative that I question him. He may be the Masked Man, he may not, but I have no doubt that he’s the key to unravelling this mess. But I’m afraid our main priority now must be to protect the property and the people of the Farside by any means necessary. We’re completely outnumbered and if the Criminal Elements all strike at once we could be in very grave danger. Lowsiders good and bad too. Imagine what might follow . . . riots, recriminations, chaos . . . And there’s only one way I can think of stopping Lowsiders entering the Farside.’

Everyone looked at each other nervously. What could he possibly mean?

Theodore sighed heavily. ‘It’s only happened once before in the whole of Cooper history, during the Great Revolt, but I fear it must happen again. The gate in the Great Wall must be closed!’

Wilma gasped, her eyes as large as saucers. The border gate between the Farside and the Lowside was to be shut and bolted. This was as serious a matter as she could ever imagine. A dread silence filled the room.

Then Glenda spoke.

‘Is this doable, Melba?’

The bookish law keeper blinked, gulped and nodded. ‘In extreme circumstances, yes. A Cooperate General can give the order.’

‘It seems we have no choice,’ declared Glenda gravely. ‘Dromley, let it be known that I am giving the order. To the Great Wall! There’s not a moment to lose!’

‘But . . .’ called out Wilma, running after everyone as they hurried from the room, ‘it will be opened again, won’t it? Won’t it?’

Nobody answered her. Because nobody had the answer.

The scene at the Great Wall was one of shock and pandemonium. Never before in living memory had the border gate been barricaded shut and people on both sides stood watching in stunned silence. There had never been much love lost between Farsiders and Lowsiders, but, all the same, it was still upsetting.

Crowds of angry Lowsiders were being marshalled along the rim of the wall and back through the Great Gate while the Farsiders looked on in confusion. Dark clouds were gathering to the east and a metallic-smelling wind was picking up pace, a sure sign that more rain was on its way. Wilma hooked her billowing plaits behind her ears and bent down to give Pickle a reassuring stroke. She didn’t know what to feel.
